What is Social-Emotional Development?

Social-emotional development is about helping young children learn to understand, express, and regulate emotions while forming secure relationships with their caregivers. By starting in infancy and early childhood, we lay the foundation for emotional resilience, self-regulation, and social competence—all of which contribute to a child’s and family's long-term well-being.

I approach services with your baby, toddler, or preschooler with the understanding that your well-being as a parent is deeply connected to your child’s social-emotional growth. Difficult pregnancies, unexpected birth experiences, life stressors, relationships with our own childhood caregivers, strained connection with our partners and support network, and mood and anxiety disorders (postpartum and beyond) all influence how we show up with our children. That’s why this work focuses just as much on supporting you as it does on nurturing your child’s development.

Key Areas of Focus

👩‍👧 Secure Attachment & Positive Relationships – Strengthening parent-child bonds and helping caregivers develop attuned, responsive interactions with their child.

🌱 Emotional Awareness – Helping children identify and label their emotions, such as happiness, frustration, sadness, and excitement.

🧘 Co-Regulation and Self-Regulation – Supporting toddlers in learning how to manage strong emotions through co-regulation with caregivers as well as strategies like deep breathing, reading books, swinging, or finding a calming space.

🤝 Social Skills & Play – Encouraging positive peer interactions like taking turns, sharing, and cooperating.

❤️ Empathy Development – Fostering the ability to recognize and respond to the feelings of others.

Strategies for Supporting Social-Emotional Growth

I know firsthand that parenting can feel overwhelming—because it is. The early years are a whirlwind, and sometimes, it’s hard to hear your own instincts through all the outside noise. That’s why I take a relationship-first, research-backed approach that helps families build confidence in their unique parenting journey.

Modeling & Coaching – I work alongside you, offering guidance on how to respond to your child’s emotions in a way that fosters security and connection.

Emotion Labeling & Validation – Together, we'll help your child develop emotional language, while also giving you tools to co-regulate and support your child’s big feelings.

Storytelling & Emotional Books – Books are a powerful way to explore emotions and social challenges with young children.

Play-Based Learning – Through pretend play and interactive games, children practice important social-emotional skills like sharing, turn-taking, and problem-solving.

Positive Reinforcement – Parents can encourage desired behaviors in a way that fosters confidence and intrinsic motivation.

Providing Structure & PredictabilityConsistent routines help children feel secure and manage transitions with ease.
